Henry millers tropic of cancer7/8/2023 ![]() Frances Steloff founded Gotham Book Mart in 1920 and it gained a reputation as a major avant-garde literary hub and one of the top bookstores in the world with its deep catalog of books for sale. In 1972, New Mexico voters passed a $10 million bond to purchase library materials for the state’s universities and colleges. Beginning in 1974, New Mexico State University’s library received $2 million over a five-year period to purchase books. Contacted by the world-famous Gotham Book Mart in midtown Manhattan, regarding the sale of most of the store’s used literary inventory, university leaders found the offer economically sound and an ideal way to increase the library shelves with arts and humanities titles. 3. In reviewing the history of publications that have been banned in the United States, I decided to write a brief history of the copies of Henry Miller’s "The Tropic of Cancer" found in Special Collections, hoping to illuminate how books can be kept from the reading public. Snyder has done it again which is why I have to give this book 5/5 stars. I could see how much work was put in to the writing as well as feel the devotion behind the characters and the plot from the author’s choices. My passion and excitement were heightened at a whole new level and recently these feelings have been revived on completion of Shadow Study. I was immersed and utterly impressed with this world that had been created. I was in love captivated from the first line of the first book in the Study series titled Poison Study giving it 5/5 stars. This has to be one of my favorites so far that I have read from Snyder. I recently finished Snyder’s first book, Shadow Study, in her new series titled Soulfinders and I can’t express to you how much I enjoyed it. ![]() Mere christianity cliff notes7/7/2023 ![]() But it produced what one Jewish scholar called, “the most powerful of hegemonic cultural systems in the history of the world.” Christianity began in paradox-in the midst of cultures that stressed power, pride, honor, and strength-it stressed the weak and the suffering. That the eternal God would have a Son who became flesh, and then be tortured to death on a cross was both stupefying and repellent not “merely blasphemy but madness.” It took centuries but eventually “a corpse served as an icon of majesty.” Įventually Christians, because of Jesus, came to believe that God was closer to the weak than the mighty. ![]() A person felt tainted by even viewing it. Far from being an internal, passive container for our thoughts and experiences, human consciousness is constantly projecting itself into the outside world and imbuing it with meaning. In a new and more accessible translation, this foundational text argues that we alone create our values and our existence is characterized by freedom and the inescapability of choice. ![]() A brilliant and radical account of the human condition, Being and Nothingness explores what gives our lives significance.
